SERVICE DESK LEADERSHIP / APPLICATION SUPPORT / AUTOMATION

Fixing IT. Automating the boring bits. Overbuilding the fun bits.

I'm Nathan Barter. I untangle technical problems, help teams build confidence and look for better ways to run support. I also build side projects, because apparently troubleshooting things during office hours wasn't enough.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & EVIDENCE

More than a CV.

My career has been built around understanding how people work, solving the technical problems in their way, and sharing enough knowledge to make the next problem easier. The recommendations alongside these chapters come from people who worked with me, relied on my support or used the services I helped deliver.

Wiltshire Police

Full-time · Hybrid

Service Desk Analyst

I provide first and second-line support across a large policing organisation, owning incidents through to resolution and supporting operational and corporate users when reliability, judgement and clear communication matter.

Alongside troubleshooting Active Directory, Microsoft 365, SCCM/MECM, VPN, Windows and mobile technologies, I contribute to major incidents, problem management and service improvement. I also build PowerShell tools—including an internally used support utility—to reduce repetitive administration, improve consistency and shorten resolution times.

During my time at Wiltshire Police I required various IT support requirements in my role. Nathan proved to be a confident and professional IT support technician. He demonstrated expert knowledge and provided support to me throughout the project I worked on. It was a fast-paced and changing IT environment which Nathan embraced and was not fazed by the challenges he and the department faced. I would highly recommend Nathan in any future role he chose to pursue.

Descartes Systems UK Ltd

Full-time · 3 yrs 8 mos · Chippenham

SmartCompliance 2nd Line Support

Promoted from first-line application support into second-line support, becoming the primary escalation point for complex technical and customer incidents.

I line-managed and mentored five Service Desk Analysts across Chippenham and Stockport, worked directly with developers, R&D teams, third-party suppliers and resellers, and delivered training that enabled colleagues and customers to support—and train—others.

Application Support Technician

I supported customers ranging from independent operators to household-name organisations through phone and email support, specialising in tachograph remote-download hardware and its supporting systems.

The product knowledge and escalation experience built in this role led to my promotion into second-line support.

WAGS Retired Police Dogs Trust

Volunteer Web Developer

I offered to help when the charity was struggling with its social-media presence, website, online donations and getting merchandise online. I modernised the site, made its purpose and donation routes clearer, and connected an online selling platform while a dedicated store was still out of reach.

This was practical, ongoing digital support for an organisation helping retired Police dogs across Wiltshire, Avon and Somerset, and Gloucestershire, rather than a website delivered and forgotten.

Early IT career & Police project work

Building practical experience

These roles built the practical foundations I still rely on: understanding an environment properly, retaining the details that matter and becoming someone people can approach when they need context or a sensible route forward.

Production Assistant (Mastering) · Cardwave Services

Produced master copies for flash-memory products under tight deadlines, delegated work across the team and covered Production Supervisor responsibilities including scheduling and staff allocation.

Desktop Support Technician · Wiltshire Council

OCT 2014 — JUL 2015 · CONTRACT

Moved with the Police IT service into the Council, joined the Home Office-deadline XP remediation project and helped deploy Windows 7. I trained Council IT colleagues on Police systems and the common faults they would encounter.

IST Support Officer · Wiltshire Police

NOV 2013 — OCT 2014 · CONTRACT

Handled service desk calls, email and in-person support in a high-pressure environment; maintained hardware and software, logged work in SCSM and rebuilt mobile systems used by officers.

Repaired and upgraded PCs and laptops, recovered data, removed malware and supported local businesses while completing my college IT course.

Got something worth talking about?

You've reached the end, which either means something here caught your attention or you're impressively committed to scrolling. I'm particularly interested in senior or lead service desk roles, application support, team development and practical automation—though an interesting problem is usually the best way to start a conversation.
